When purchasing your gadget’s accessories, you might have noticed a massive price range… from cheaper ones to over expensive amounts for what seems to be the same product. Then you ask yourself:  Do more expensive items really make a difference, or is it just clever marketing?  HDMI cables are among these accessories to our gadgets that we often look for in the store, and do you also find them to vary in price though it seems they look the same?

High-Definition Multimedia Interface most commonly known as HDMI cables transmit audio and video digital signals from one device to another.  It may be used to connect a TV to a gaming console, a laptop to a TV, or other devices to AV systems.  Its different types include HDMI 1.4 cables for HDMI Ethernet channel and Audio return channel, HDMI 1.4a for two broadcast content 3D formats, and HDMI-1.5 and HDMI-3 which are considered premium high-speed cables with Ethernet.

Actually, price alone cannot dictate quality, there are factors that can affect a cable’s performance.  So, what really affects HDMI cable connections?

Cable Length.  Nearly all HDMI cables will work the same for ten feet or shorter distances.  However, you may experience signal degradation when the distance is longer such as those over 25 feet.  So, to avoid this issue, a higher-quality cable with better shielding is recommended.

Cable Version and Bandwidth.  Actually, a cheap cable that doesn’t meet the required bandwidth can cause flickering, resolution drops, or signal loss.  So, you must choose the compatible version of your device or appliance.  For example, if you have a 4K or 8K display, you should use HDMI 2.0 or 2.1  because they are the ones that can support the necessary bandwidth.

Build Quality.  If you are after the longevity of the cable especially if it is plugged and unplugged more often, then you have to purchase premium cables.  They have better shielding, thicker wires, and more durable connectors.  However, these features don’t really enhance the signal itself, only the durability of the cable.

So, when to consider buying a more expensive HDMI cable?

Extra-Long Cable Requirements.  A running cable over 25 feet long should have better shielding.

Gaming or High-End Video Output.  This will require 2.1 cable so ensure that you get a certified Ultra High-Speed  HDMI cable.

More Durable Cable Preference.  Frequently moving your devices will require a more flexible cable, so you will need reinforced connectors and braided shielding.  Spending a bit more for this flexibility can be worth it.

Those are the top uses of higher-quality HDMI cable but should not necessarily be overpriced.

The Bottom Line:  Expensive Doesn’t Always Mean Better

Well, instead of buying the most expensive HDMI cable, search for a certified, well-reviewed one.  Most people enjoyed the benefits of a well-rated standard HDMI cable that worked just as well as a premium one.  So, next time, don’t be fooled by marketing gimmicks such as gold-plated connectors and thick cables for they won’t improve the audio or video quality unless you want to address a specific issue in your cable requirements.
